'Arrow' Season 4 News, Spoilers: Paul Blackthorne On Laurel's Death; Showrunner Teases 'Grim' Finale
On Wednesday, "Arrow" showed the funeral it teased early this season, in an episode that saw Laurel Lance's (Katie Cassidy) family and friends grieving and trying to come to terms with her passing.
In the episode, titled "Canary Cry," Team Arrow mourned the Black Canary as they dealt with a wayward teen who stole the superheroine's sonic device. Propelled by the teen's crime, Oliver (Stephen Amell), who didn't want the Black Canary's legacy to be sullied by a petty criminal, revealed Laurel's secret identity and even made sure that her tombstone identified her as the Black Canary.
Elsewhere in "Canary Cry," Diggle (David Ramsey) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) blamed themselves for Laurel's death while Quentin (Paul Blackthorne) tried to find a way to bring his daughter back to life.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Blackthorne spoke about Laurel's passing and its aftermath, saying that the rest of the season will see the emotional fallout from the character's tragic death.
He also talked about how Quentin Lance, his character, will deal with learning that Damien Darhk's (Neal McDonough) last words to Laurel, when he killed her, were blaming Lance for her death.
According to Blackthorne, though he knows that this will be revealed to him somewhere down the line, he doesn't think that the information will come from any of the members of Team Arrow. "I don't think any of them would have had the heart to tell Lance," the actor said.
Blackthorne also hinted at how learning about Darhk's last words to Laurel will affect Lance going forward.
"It doesn't take much to work out that that revenge had much to do with Lance's actions in the past and testifying against Darhk in the courtroom," he said, "and in a twisted way, he obviously gave her enough reason to kill her, which is something that will haunt Lance forever."
Meanwhile, the show's season 4 finale sounds like its shaping up to be a deadly episode. Speaking to TVLine, "Arrow" showrunner Wendy Mericle said, "It's a pretty grim one, I'm sad to say."
"We have a huge number of potential fatalities," she explained. "And you'll definitely get a hint about where the team is headed for Season 5."
"Arrow" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
