"Assassin's Creed" Movie News: Michael Fassbender's Character Details Revealed

The live-action movie adaptation of the popular action-adventure video game franchise "Assassin's Creed" is building up the hype as the movie is ramping up production in time for its release in theaters in December 2016. According to a report in IGN, Ubisoft Motion Pictures has shared details, including a photo of the character that will be played by lead Michael Fassbender.

The report cited Yahoo news as their source and according to the report, Fassbender is going to play a new assassin and not an existing assassin character in any of the games in the series, like Desmond Miles or Ezio Auditore da Firenze. A new character was created especially for the movie, going by the name Callum Lynch.

Lynch lives in a modern-day setting, but as the story goes, he eventually finds out that he is a descendant of a secret society of Assassin's. He uses the Animus to go back in time and "relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar." As he does this, he gains skills and expertise as an assassin which he needs to fight rival Knights Templar when he goes back to his present-day life.

The photo Ubisoft provided also gave fans a first look of Fassbender as he is suited up as Aguilar in 15th century Spain during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.

According to another report in IGN, the movie's universe will be a shared universe with the games, the comics and the books of the franchise. Aymar Azaiza, who is head of Assassin's Creed content, confirmed as much via Twitter, during a chat with fans. One interesting tidbit he revealed during the chat was that familiar characters who are part of the modern-day Abstergo Industries will likely appear in the movie. Abstergo is the one behind the Knights Templar society in present day, according to the game's storyline.

The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel, with a screenplay by "Macbeth's" Michael Lesslie with Bill Collage and Adam Cooper. It also stars Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed.

Film production will start next week in locations that include Spain, London and Malta.
