'Attack on Titan' Season 3 News: Premiere Date Set for July 2018; Compilation Movie Coming First

It looks like fans of "Attack on Titan" will not have a lot of waiting to do in between seasons 2 and 3.

According to Polygon, the upcoming third season of the popular Japanese anime will premiere in July next year. Given that season 2 ended in June, fans will only need to wait for a little over a year before the anime returns. This is significantly shorter than the period between seasons 1 and 2. It can be recalled that season 1 concluded in 2013, but the anime only returned earlier this year.

Apart from the third season of "Attack on Titan," it was also announced during a live concert in Tokyo on Sunday that a new compilation movie would be released prior to the next cycle's July release date. Titled "The Roar of Awakening," the film is scheduled to premiere sometime in January 2018.

It remains to be seen, though, what the movie will consist of. Funimation previously released two recap movies titled "Guren no Yumiya" and "Jiyuu no Tsubasa," but the studio has yet to confirm any plot details about the upcoming film.

As for what season 3 will have in store for viewers, according to Comicbook, there is a reason to believe that it will cover the "Return to Shiganshina" arc. This is based on an observation a user pointed out on Reddit: Annie and Ymir will be appearing the third season.

It is currently known that the new season will tackle the "Uprising" arc, but Ymir does not appear heavily in that story. For this reason, fans believe that the "Return to Shiganshina" arc will also be told. Additionally, if this is the case, then "Attack on Titan" season 3 could have more episodes to offer. After all, one short season is not enough to cover two important arcs.

Season 2 only consisted of 12 episodes, but the anime's debut season had 25 episodes. It is possible that "Attack on Titan" season 3 could have a similar episode count as season 1, though this has yet to be officially confirmed.

"Attack on Titan" season 3 will premiere sometime in July 2018.
