Australian Open 2012: Kim Clijsters Defends Title During First Round
Kim Clijsters has successfully defended her Australian Open title after beating Portugal's Maria Joao Koehler with straight sets on Monday.
The 28-year-old, who has been affectionately dubbed "Aussie Kim" by her Australian fans, defeated Koehler, 19, with straight sets despite her slow start 7-5, 6-1.
During the first set, Clijsters' fans appeared nervous when Koehler, who was ranked no. 227 last season, was tied with the Belgian former world no. 1 at 5-5.
Clijsters, named one of "30 Legends of Women's Tennis: Past, Present and Future" by TIME magazine, appeared to be the stronger player, although some feared last year’s injuries could affect her ability.
Although the fan favorite won last year's Australian Open Grand Slam title, unexpected ankle injuries proved so serious that she was forced to withdraw from a number of tournaments, including the 2011 U.S. Open and Wimbledon.
Despite having 15 unforced errors, Clijsters was able to secure the first set before taking the second in half the time.
"It's great to be back. I always love coming to Australia but the feeling is even stronger now after last year," Clijsters told the Rod Laver Arena crowd.
"I came out on to the court and felt all the good memories of last time but I had to focus because she's a good player," she added.
The name "Aussie Kim" relates to her previous engagement to long term Australian partner, tennis pro Lleyton Hewitt.
Though the pair split in 2004 and both moved on with new marriages, fans reportedly considered Clijsters as an Australian because of her frequent visits and strong ties to the nation.
Although Clijsters previously insisted that 2012 would be her final year playing at the Australian Open, critics suspect this could change depending on her success at defending her title this year.
The mother of one is currently ranked world no. 14.
