'Avatar 2' cast, news, spoilers: Michelle Rodriguez will not be joining sequel
"Avatar" has been one of the most successful animation films to date. Grossing more than $2 billion, it became 2010's best-selling film, as it was nominated for a number of Academy Awards, and winning three of them. When it was announced that three more sequels will be produced from 2017 to 2019, many weren't surprised as they somehow saw it coming.
Many actors have been rumored to be reprising their roles, such as Sigourney Weaver, who has been confirmed. However, Weaver will not reprise her role as Dr. Grace Augustine. Dr. Grace was killed off in the first film so many feel that she will either take on a non-physical form or an entirely new one.
However, one actress that will surely not be gracing the sequel is Michelle Rodriguez. Her catchphrase "I see you" has become iconic with the film so it's quite a shame that she won't be part of the second installment. Rodriguez, who attended the Gabriela Cadena fashion show, told NY Post that she has not been asked by director James Cameron to appear in the 2017 sequel. She is quoted saying, "They're bringing back a lot of other characters. I know [Sigourney Weaver's] coming back and the guy who played the bad guy, [Stephen Lang], is coming back. But yeah, I'm not gonna be in it." There is still time, however, should Cameron decide to include Rodriguez later on, but for now, fans will have to wait and see.

As for the story line, Movie News Guide recently reported that Cameron will be keeping the "environment" theme going on in the next films. He was quoted saying, "We're making up an ocean ecosystem for Pandora. That's gonna have less to do with the deep exploration that I've done than it has to do with my concerns about conservation of Earth's oceans. The fact that we're basically overfishing, climate change… a few degrees of temperature rise are gonna basically take out the coral reefs. All those beautiful images of the coral environments we all grew up with won't exist in 50 years at the rate we're going in terms of pumping greenhouse gases into the environment. These are the things that concern me." The movie has always tried to imbibe a lesson about saving nature, and after the last story taking place in the forest, it may be now shifting to an aqua environment.
