'Avenue 5' Space Comedy News: 'Veep' Creator Armando Iannucci Helms HBO Pilot

The mind behind HBO comedy series "Veep," which is now in its final season, is looking to switch gears in a big way. Armando Iannucci ditches Washington for outer space as he sets to work on a pilot of "Avenue 5," the working title of a new HBO comedy set in the space-faring future.

HBO has ordered backup scripts and a pilot for "Avenue 5," the tentative title of a new space comedy to be created, written and executive produced by Iannucci. The show will be mostly set on a spaceship, as sources shared with Deadline on Monday, Sep. 25.

The pilot for the upcoming series is expected to start filming in London in 2018, where Iannucci's family is also based. One of the reasons for his departure from the critically-acclaimed "Veep" is how the demands of the series have taken a toll on his family.

He left the show in 2015 but continued working on other HBO-sponsored projects since. "Veep" has gone on to win three consecutive Emmy awards for best comedy series for seasons 4, 5 and 6. Lead star Julia Louis-Dreyfus also claimed a record-breaking six Best Actress in a Comedy Series awards for the entire run of the show.

The video below shows the trailer for the latest season of "Veep," showcasing Iannucci's brand of humor as grounded in Washington, before it flies off to space in the form of a new "Avenue 5" series next year. Season 7 is set to return next year, as announced by HBO.
