'Awkward' Season 5B News, Plot, Cast: Season 5B Returning After a One-Year Jump

MTV's "Awkward" is definitely one of those quirky unexpected hits. Being on its fifth year, things have continuously been getting better with the humor on the show. However, for a show revolving around highschool drama, a lot can happen in one week, what more in one year, which the show plans to do when it returns for season 5B.

According to MTV, when Jenna's crew returns to the viewers in 2016, everything might have already changed as it will jump to a time when they have all done one year in their colleges. With this said, the story lines of the characters could have already gone countless different ways, and so there's no safe assumption to what could be welcoming fans. Showrunners Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini were asked by TVLine on what can be expected when the show comes back. Chessler said, "What we're exploring [in Season 5B] is what I think happens to any couple in high school. They'll have to start negotiating how to sustain a relationship once you're going to different colleges."

One of the biggest questions that will probably plague followers of the show is whether Matty and Jenna are still together. The excruciating finale of season 5A left a big cliff-hanger showing Jenna driving Matty up to his college as they decided on still being a couple. However, the relief that fans felt for the two was short-lived, as Jenna immediately shattered everyone's hopes by saying, "Of course, that's not quite what happened."

Chessler shared their plans for Matty and Jenna's relationship, "In terms of the Matty/Jenna story, it was very clear to us when we took over the show what it was about, and … we've ended up in a place that's very organic, based on who these characters are. The reason people relate to Jenna and Matty's romantic arc is because it's so true to high school relationships."

As for rumors of another season, Chessler spoke for him and Alberghini as he talked about his hopes for a renewal, "We're hopeful that 5B is not going to be the end of the show. That's not been determined yet, one way or the other. But 5B would be the end of this chapter of the story, because if we continue the show, I think it would be another era and another part of the journey."
