'Bates Motel' Showrunner Confirms That Marion Crane Will Suffer a Different Fate in Season 5

A&E Network's psychological horror drama series, "Bates Motel," will premiere its fifth and final season this Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Fans are now anticipating the first appearance of the newest addition to the cast, Rihanna, who will show up as Marion Crane. This was the famous role played by Janet Leigh in the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film "Psycho" which was based on a novel with the same name by Robert Bloch. This is also the RnB singer's debut performance for a television role.

Showrunner Kerry Ehrin revealed that Marion will suffer a different fate from the original film and novel that the series is based on. This is largely because the female character is now portrayed in a whole new contemporary light.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ehrin shared that their goal in writing the new Marion Crane's story is to "show [fans] the inside of what was going on in her head, give her more complexity."

"The internal story of that, for a woman, is a really interesting one. We never really got to see that in Psycho, you just see the outside of it," Ehrin added, according to EW.

As to whether the series will also adopt the famous shower scene from the Hitchcock movie, Ehrin only said that fans just need to "watch and find out."

In addition, Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) will be very much heading towards a downward spiral this season after the death of his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) in season 4.

The new season will pick up 18 months after Norma's death, but Dylan (Max Thieriot) is still even unaware of it. The moment he finds out, it is likely he blames none other than Norman for the tragic event.

As for Norman, he is already living in multiple realities but is still functioning without him even realizing it. "He's very, very isolated and lonely. But he's trying. He's running the motel. He's doing a good job. He's doing a good job of covering," says Ehrin.

Catch the premiere of "Bates Motel" season 5 on A&E Network, Feb. 20, on 10 p.m. EST.
