'Batman: The Enemy Within' News: Developers Release Update to Remove Image of Real-Life Assassination
Developed by Telltale Games, "Batman: The Enemy Within" has garnered the positive attention of the gaming community since it was released two months ago. It is lauded for its episodic nature, which kept fans on the edge of their seats, waiting for whatever will happen next.
However, it seems that the developers have taken the game title to the next level after fans discovered that a Telltale developer used an image of a real-life assassination in the latest episode.
"An update to the game has been submitted this morning that will be removing the image across all platforms. We regret this incident occurred, and we are taking appropriate action internally to ensure that we continue to maintain our high standards in Production and Quality Assurance," said game developer Telltale Games in a statement, as reported by Gamasutra.
According to GamesRadar, the image was discovered as it was superimposed in a robbery scene at Gotham brokerage. The image is of the Russian ambassador of Ankara Andrei Karlov, who was assassinated by the Turkish police during his speech in an art gallery located in Ankara. He was killed in December 2016.
Through further research, it seems that the image that was used temporarily for "Batman: The Enemy Within" is available in Getty Images, where it costs $575 before anyone can use and license the image.
Although it is a common practice for developers to model the general scenery and images in the game after specific real-life pictures, experts say that they would have to be careful in doing so, as they can encounter legal ramifications, among other consequences. In the case of "Batman: The Enemy Within," Telltale Games has yet to release information on what will happen to the developer, who accidentally used the image of Karlov moments before he was shot.
"Batman: The Enemy Within" is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, and PC.
