'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' News: Triumvirate of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman Beats 'Deadpool,' 'Guardians of the Galaxy' in Terms of Worldwide Box Office Record
Despite the unforgiving criticisms hurled against it and its steady decline at the box-office, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" manages to emerge victorious in more ways than one. As of this writing, if it's of any consolation to Warner Bros. and DC, the movie has already surpassed the box-office performance of some of Marvel's superhero-themed movies, such as "Deadpool," "Guardians of the Galaxy," and "The Amazing Spider-Man."
After opening strong during its first week at the box office, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" suffered a 69 percent on its second weekend and another 55 percent drop on its third weekend. While it's true that forecasters may have been correct in predicting that it would be impossible for "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" to match "Deadpool's" $380 million domestic box-office sales, the same thing cannot be said about how the DC movie fared in the global box-office arena.
Domestically, meaning in the Northern American box-office, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" has only delivered $296 million. However, it's a totally different ballgame for the movie in the global scene as both Batman and Superman are popular superheroes in many countries around the world. With this, the movie has raked in almost $500 million already, bringing the total sales of the movie to a total $785,788,223 worldwide gross.
This puts "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" at an advantage over other Marvel movies. "Deadpool," for instance, only managed to make $755 million globally while another Marvel superhero film, "The Amazing Spider-Man," raked in ($758M). "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" also surpassed the global box-office performance of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and original "Star Wars," as the two only made $773 and $ 775 million, respectively.
However, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" did not only beat some Marvel movies; it also surpassed the record made by its fellow DC movie, the 2013 Henry Cavill starrer "Man of Steel," which made $668,045,518 worldwide. Nonetheless, the record that "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" currently has still pales in comparison to that of two other DC and Warner Bros. movies, "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises," which made $1,004,558,444 and $1,084,939,099, respectively, worldwide.
Even if the movie is still showing in theaters worldwide, experts opine that there is a dim chance for "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" to cross the $1 billion mark, although it only needs $800 million for it to make profit. Estimates on the maximum that the movie will make are pegged at less than $900 million worldwide.
