'Beauty and the Beast' Music Video News: Belle Upholds Feminism in Unconventional Gesture

A song is an integral part of making a film stick to its audiences, creating a special part in their memory. As such, the live adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast" has released a modern version of its iconic theme song, and the music video has done more than inciting nostalgia.

In the official music video featuring Ariana Grande and John Legend, both singers were belting out their own versions of the classic melody originally sang by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson. John Legend was at his usual station, crooning sweet tunes as he plays the piano while Ariana Grande is surrounded by oversized rose petal-clad dancers. Though their rendition is obviously different from that of the original, it still captures the magic of the first dance with a modern twist.

Considering it is never an easy task to remake such an iconic song, fans have been comparing both versions, judging which was better. In the middle of the heated debate, Belle (Emma Watson) did something extraordinary yet subtle at the same time, further cementing her feminist status.

In the video, after Belle and the Beast (Dan Stevens) walked down the flight of stairs, Belle reached out her hand with palms facing up, asking for the Beast's hand so they can dance. This is an unconventional gesture since it is usually the man who asks for a woman's hand, yet apparently, this film is choosing to be bold and daring by breaking all norms.

This isn't the only time she has stood up for feminism. Watson hits back at critics who call her a hypocrite after exposing part of her breasts for a Vanity Fair spread. She says during an interview with Reuters, "Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It's about freedom. It's about liberation. It's about equality. It's not — I really don't know what my t*ts have to do with it."

From the looks of it, both Belle and Emma Watson are changing the game for the better. "Beauty and the Beast" enchants audiences both young and old on March 17, 2017.
