The long-gestating project that is "Beetlejuice 2" is moving along, presenting a promising possibility that it could see the light of day after all.

According to Deadline, prolific screenwriter Mike Vukadinovich has been tapped to rewrite the much-awaited sequel. He is the man behind a lot of hit films, the latest of which is the mystery drama "Rememory" starring Peter Dinklage and the late Anton Yelchin.

There is no further information about the plot for "Beetlejuice 2" or what Vukadinovich has planned. Despite this, fans of the cult-favorite who have been waiting for good news about the project are just happy things are moving along.

After all, last year, Michael Keaton, who played the titular character, said that the "ship has sailed" and that he knows "zero" about "Beetlejuice 2," saying:

You always hear things, that this is happening, and people seem to know more about it than I do.

Previous rumors suggested that the sequel will bring together Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) together although there is no way of knowing how that will work.

At the moment, Tim Burton, who directed the 1988 original, is not confirmed to return. The same goes for Keaton. Thankfully, the abovementioned publication notes that both are excited about the idea of reuniting for "Beetlejuice 2." They are currently working together on a live-action Dumbo movie.

Last year, Keaton said last year that if the magic of the original cannot be achieved again, there is no reason to bother trying:

The only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can't get close to that, you leave it alone.

With Burton also interested, however, it is possible that "Beetlejuice 2" just might make it to the big screen in the end.
