Benedict Cumberbatch Wedding News: Actor Marries Sophie Hunter on Valentines Day
Benedict Cumberbatch is off the list of eligible celebrity bachelors as he confirms that he has tied the knot with Sophie Hunter this Valentine's Day weekend.
According to a report on BBC Newsbeat, the announcement was made by the actor's spokesperson a day after the private wedding ceremony. The report said that the couple exchanged vows in "a private ceremony with family and close friends on the Isle of Wight."
People reports that the ceremony took place at the 12th century Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Mottistone on the island and the reception followed at the nearby Mottistone Manor, which dates back to the year 1086.
In attendance during the ceremony, according to the report, were Cumberbatch's co-stars in "Sherlock," Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott, and actor Tom Hiddleston. People also mentioned the attendance of playwright Polly Stenham, actor Tobias Menzies and pianist James Rhodes, while saying that Dame Judi Dench was not able to join. It was reported that the choice of the ceremony and reception venue may have to do with the fact that Hunter is related to the original owners of Mottistone Manor, the Nicholsons.
Cumberbatch, 38, met Sophie Hunter, 36, when they worked in the 2009 film "Burlesque Fairytales." Hunter is a theatre and opera director, mostly of avant-garde plays, and is also a playwright, actress and singer. Their wedding follows their announcement of their engagement in November 2014, which was published in the Times of London, instead of the usual social media platforms. The couple are also expecting their first child later this year.
Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes in the popular "Sherlock" series of BBC and was recently nominated for Best Actor in the 2015 Oscars for his role as Alan Turing in the movie "The Imitation Game." Fans will have a first look at the newly-married couple when Cumberbatch attends the 2015 Oscars show on Feb. 22.
