'Big Little Lies' Reviews Round-Up, Replay Schedule: HBO Miniseries Gets Good Feedback for Unconventional Mommy Wars Plot
The newest HBO miniseries "Big Little Lies" has recently gathered positive feedback from critics and viewers mostly because of its plot that is generally described as an unconventional story of rivalry among mothers who want to paint a perfect picture of their own families.
"Big Little Lies" is based on a same title novel written by Liane Moriarty and set in a beachside town in California. The TV miniseries, which was penned by David E. Kelly and helmed by Jean-Marc Vallée, premiered Feb. 19 with the episode titled "Somebody's Dead."
After the highly anticipated premiere, review websites Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes recorded a fairly good rating and noted compliments for the show.
At Metacritic, "Big Little Lies" got a 75 out of 100 average score from 37 critics. One of the reviews that Metacritic had was from Vicki Hyman of the Newark Star-Ledger who commented, "The basic structure is compelling enough -- viewers don't even know who the identity of the murder victim is through much of the series, and the layered performances keep us in flux over who we'd like to kill off, and who we wish would do the killing."
On the other hand, over at Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' score for the "Big Little Lies" premiere was a good 86 percent rating, with critics saying in agreement, "Bitingly funny and highly addictive, Big Little Lies is a twisty, thrilling, enlightening ride led by a first-rate cast." On the same website, the audience's score was not that bad either with 75 percent of them liking it.
The show gravitates a lot of interest and one factor is its star-studded cast, which includes Nicole Kidman as Celeste, Reese Witherspoon as Madeline and Shailene Woodley as Jane. All three portray women coming from different situations who find common ground in their struggles as wives and mothers. What's even more intriguing is that the synopsis for the TV miniseries version of "Big Little Lies" has earlier hinted that someone will end up committing murder.
