'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Renewal Rumors: Director Reconsiders New Season After Saying It's a One-Off Show

"Big Little Lies" emerged as the big winner at the Emmy Awards last Sunday, Sept. 17, for the Limited Series category. The show's success made director Jean-Marc Vallée reconsider a second season after previously saying that the show was a one-off production.

Vallée went home with his Emmy trophy after winning the Outstanding Director award. Backstage with the press, Vallée said that he's on board for another season with the ladies of "Big Little Lies" if their schedules permit.

Not so long ago, the director had a different perspective about doing a follow-up to the HBO show.

In April, Vallée told Vulture that he understood "Big Little Lies" to be a one-season deal and he thought the story ended perfectly. It left the audience to make their own conclusions about the lead characters after toppling down the story's antagonist.

"There's no reason to make a season two," the director said back then. "If we do a season two, we'll break that beautiful thing and spoil it."

The show followed the same ending as its book version, which author Liane Moriarty wrote and published in 2014. The book had no more follow up, which is why Vallée thought that the show would share the same fate. But in July, HBO asked to the author to prepare a potential season 2 story, sans greenlighting another season.

Moriarty was also at the Emmy Awards night celebrating with the director, as well as executive producer David E. Kelley and stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern. She told the press she's indeed thinking of a follow-up but nothing has been set.

Aside from winning the director trophy, "Big Little Lies" also won Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Nicole Kidman, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Laura Dern, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Alexander Skarsgard and Outstanding Writing for David E. Kelley.
