'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Update: Renewal Becoming More Likely
"Big Little Lies" season 2 is becoming a bigger possibility, based on the latest update provided by executive producer and writer David E. Kelley.
Kelley recently talked to TVLine about the award-winning HBO series during the TV Game Changers panel hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association:
We're kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent [and] get the band back together. It's just a lot of logistical things. But I'm optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do. No decision has been made yet, but we're hopeful. Where we left it, I felt like it did open the opportunity for a lot more storytelling.
Based on the book by Liane Moriarty, "Big Little Lies" was a major hit, receiving 16 Emmy Award nominations and bagging half of these awards including Outstanding Limited Series.
The success of the show had fans divided about a second season. Some believe that the show as amazing as "Big Little Lies" should be left alone to preserve its legacy.
Oftentimes, follow-up to successful one-time projects usually do not live up to the original and they are afraid that such could be the case for this show. After all, "Big Little Lies" is meant to be a limited miniseries only, whose story was supposed to be told in seven episodes only.
However, some fans who loved it wanted to see more since they believe that there are more stories to tell and more secrets to uncover in Monterey. Those who read the book point out reductions from the story including elements centered on Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz).
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who starred on the series and also served as producers, expressed their interest to make "Big Little Lies" season 2 happen. However, the former said that it is "totally in Liane Moriarty's court."
The ball is definitely in her court because these characters were born of her mind and her imagination, and we just want to see if she's interested in creating more story about these characters.
The actress also hinted that new characters might even be featured in "Big Little Lies" season 2.
