'Big Little Lies' Rumors: Book Readers Already Know the Identity of the Victim

HBO's dark comedy-drama, "Big Little Lies," which is based on Liane Moriarty's book of the same name, premiered just this month.

The show wasted no time in unfolding the central events of the story, but it still kept vital information under wraps.

For viewers who weren't able to read the book, there seems to be no way of knowing yet who the murderer and victim of the school fundraiser incident are - and the Monterey community is not helping much either.

Although Jane (Shailene Woodley) could have been an easy victim due to her youth and secret past, readers of the book would already know that the victim is actually Perry (portrayed by Alexander Skarsgard), but that is if the series will follow its source material religiously.

In the book, Perry is revealed to be a jerk and domestic abuser, and it is rather poignant that he ended up as a victim, rather than being the murderer. To spoil the plot even more, book readers would also know that Jane had something to do with Perry's death because he took advantage of her in the past and fathered her son.

The central mystery of the show "Big Little Lies," however, will interweave between several mothers who are played by Woodley, Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Martha MacKenzie, Laura Dern as Renata Klein, Nicole Kidman as Celeste Wright, and Zoe Kravitz as Bonnie Carlson. They all have children enrolled in the same school and were all attending the event when the murder took place.

The characters also live in the same upper class, seaside California neighborhood.

"It is a very complicated and layered story about motherhood, marriage, and friendship and image and secrets and the lies we tell others and ourselves," Kravitz said in an interview with Yahoo! TV.

Kravitz plays Bonnie, the second wife of Madeline's ex husband, Nathan Carlson (James Tupper). Naturally, there is some kind of tension between the two women, but both are also trying their best to keep it civil for the sake of their children.

"I have compassion for Madeline's character in thinking that Bonnie's annoying and probably fake," Kravitz explained to Yahoo! TV. "She acts like she wants to be her friend, but she is dating her ex who left her and her child a long time ago and now is living the perfect life trying to be the perfect dad with Bonnie," the actress added.

"Big Little Lies" is a seven-part miniseries with new episodes aired every Sunday, 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
