Black Bears Street Fight in NJ Suburb (VIDEO)
Two bears were seen street fighting in the suburb of Rockaway, New Jersey this summer, according to reports. The video, which was uploaded to YouTube earlier this month, has got everyone talking about the bears, who viciously clawed and bit each other for over six minutes before retreating into the woods.
The bear street fight took place during mid-August and was filmed by YouTube user J Domzalski. The bears shoved, scratched and bit each other in the face, head and neck. The scuffle spilled from one yard into the street, and cars even drove by the black snarling mass.
The cameraman made sure to film from the safety of his car the entire time, but that didn't stop other passersby from slowing down and watching. The video has since gotten hundreds of thousands of hits and hundreds of shares, but many of those commenting wanted to know— why are the black bears fighting?
"They're probably fighting or playing because there's a good-looking lady in the area," Kelcey Burguess, a principal wildlife biologist and Black Bear Project leader for the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, told NJ.com. "It's really common to have fights during mating season."
After fighting so long that they had to take breaks in between to pant and rest, the black bears decided to call it a day. Eventually both of them sauntered off into the woods together.
