The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, is perhaps one of the busiest and most chaotic days of the year for stores as it marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, with many retailers offering markedly discounted prices. Shoppers have been known to camp outside stores and wait in lines for hours prior to opening, eager to take advantage of some of the best sales of the year.

In 2008, a Long Island, N.Y., Walmart made headlines after an employee was trampled to death by a stampede of thousands of people as they rushed through the retailer's front doors at the store's opening on Black Friday.

Other retailers, such as Toys "R" Us, Lowe's and Best Buy have expanded their hours for Black Friday this year and will be opening at midnight in an effort to get a leg up on the competition with other retailers.

Kohl's will be opening at midnight and will stay open for the next 24 hours.
