Black Friday, Cyber Monday Shopping Chaos Drives Up Online Spending 15 Percent
Industry tracker comScore reports that U.S online shopping increased by 15 percent from Nov. 1 to Dec. 9.
The report compares the increase to the same period last year.
The online sales increase was attributed to "Cyber Monday," the Monday immediately following Thanksgiving. This year’s Cyber Monday’s online sales raked in $1.25 billion because of retailer’s online promotions, according to comScore.
U.S retailers started Cyber Monday in 2005 to encourage more people to shop online.
In the past five-and-a-half-weeks, online spending reached $24.6 billion, compared to the same period in 2010, where online spending reached $21.4 billion.
With Monday being “Green Monday,” a term coined by eBay in 2007 when online sales increased dramatically on the second Monday of December, online sales are expected to continue to grow.
A Memphis-based FedEx is anticipating shipping over 17 million packages on Green Monday, the Digital Journal reports.
Green Monday day is considered the day shoppers do their last-minute Christmas shopping.
