'Black Mirror' Season 4: Fans Might Not Get the 'San Junipero' Sequel They Want
One of the highlights in the previous season of "Black Mirror" was the "San Junipero" story that captured a good amount of positive feedback, with fans asking to see more of it in season 4. Unfortunately, odds are saying that it is unlikely going to happen.
"Black Mirror" is a science fiction anthology that was recently acquired by Netflix but has been around since 2011 when it started airing on the British Channel 4. The show, conceived by Charlie Brooker, became such a hit for tackling the effects of new technologies to the modern society while adding satirical, and sometimes dark, themes to them.
In season 3 of "Black Mirror," showrunners featured the fourth episode called "San Junipero" which was set in the late '80s at a beach town with the same name as the episode's title. The "San Junipero" episode made a good strike among fans, which was not that anticipated, since it did away with the usual dark conclusion of stories featured in the show.
In a previous interview with the Telegraph, Brooker hinted that it would be impossible for them to follow through with how "San Junipero" ended. The show's creator explained: "I'm terrified of San Junipero in a way, because I think we sort of captured lightening in a bottle there. You try and think, okay, that went really well, what else can we do? But you've got to then immediately put everything you think of out of your mind, because you can't really do the same thing again."
"San Junipero" featured the love story of Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). Yorkie was introduced as an extremely shy woman and the complete opposite of Kelly, who is a force to notice in every party she goes to. This episode has also been a distinct one for having a happy ending, something that - as "Black Mirror" fans would know - is unusual for the show.
Meanwhile, apart from Brooker's statement, the "San Junipero" director, Owen Harris, has also earlier advised fans asking for a sequel of the episode to think twice, saying (via The Hollywod Reporter), "Charlie Brooker might not want to do two happy endings!"
The premiere schedule for "Black Mirror's" fourth season is yet to be announced.
