'Blade Runner 2' News, Update: Sequel To Delve On the Cult Film's Central Mystery

For decades, fans of Ridley Scott's neo-noir dystopian science-fiction film, "Blade Runner," have been discussing and often run into some debate as to whether Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard is a person or actually a replicant. Different people (even those involved in its production) offered different opinions, but this latest update could be seen as the key that could unlock the long-hidden mystery.

During the premiere of his latest film "Sicario" at the Toronto International Film Festival this past week, director Denis Villeneuve, the one to helm "Blade Runner 2," was being interviewed by the people from Crave Online.

Citing the details picked up by CinemaBlend, Villeneuve revealed that he intended the sequel to take on the original movie's aforementioned central mystery.

He was expectedly asked if Deckard is really a human or a replicant. The Canadian filmmaker opted to remain mum on the details by replying, "Now that I am on the other side of the fence I cannot answer."

However, he did promise that the question will be addressed on his follow-up title.

"The thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it," he said (via CB).

Speaking further about "Blade Runner 2," the helmer teased that the movie "will be autonomous" but still, there will be "some link" to the first, the details which "he cannot talk too much about."

Villeneuve added that despite facing the "huge challenge" bringing some fresh input into the story, he will stay true to the classic.

"It's a huge challenge, because you don't want to cut and paste, otherwise why [do it]?" he said, according to Collider. "And at the same time you have to respect what was done, so you have to find the right equilibrium between being faithful to the first one and bringing something new at the same time that will make sense to the Blade Runner universe."

Additionally, the Enemy director said that production for the new, still untitled Blade Runner film will commence next summer at the locations that are yet to be decided.
