'Blindspot' Season 3 Spoilers: Surprising Return Rocks One FBI Agent's Life

A shocking comeback will spell bad news for one Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent when "Blindspot" returns for season 5.

NBC's hit thriller is bringing back a familiar face, according to reports. Initially thought to be long gone, the mystery character is returning because of one FBI agent who had a special link to the person in question. Their connection might be some sort of a hidden blessing though, as the returning character will help the agent get out of a risky situation.

The news comes nearly two weeks after Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Ennis Esmer is coming back for season 3. The actor is set to reprise his role of Rich DotCom, the lovable tech criminal introduced in season 1. Esmer comes back in a recurring capacity.

Since his first appearance, Rich (Esmer) has made several memorable returns to the show. With the series jumping 18 months ahead for its third season, viewers will see the character in a more interesting place.

"... The FBI has decided they trust Rich Dotcom," executive producer Martin Gero explained. "So while that may be foreign to Jane as she's returning, we kind of explain, in backstory, that he's helped them out a lot and is trying to turn a new leaf. That sets the table for us to have Rich in almost half the episodes this year, and so far it's just been such a delight."

New photos from season 3 have already been released, and one of them shows Rich and Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) together on the field as they work on a case. Jane sports her FBI bullet-proof vest as Rich looks at her with a smirk. It appears Rich is enjoying the protection he gets from the FBI.

It is still unclear how many episodes the upcoming installment will have. Season 1 was composed of 23 episodes, while the second season had 22 episodes.

The third season of "Blindspot" premieres Friday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. EDT on NBC.
