'Bloodline' Season 3 News, Updates: Netflix Makes Cancellation Official; Emmy Award Winning Role of Danny Rayburn to Get More Exposure in New Season
Number of episodes of new season will also be cut from 13 to just 10.
Rumors of Netflix pulling the plug on Sony's "Bloodline" Season 3 have been making the rounds but it was not until last week that the streaming giant's vice president of original content Cindy Holland gave the confirmation of it actually happening.
Official cancellation statement
The official statement released by Holland confirmed that "Bloodline" Season 3 will be the final one for the series. The statement went on to praise Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman as thoughtful and visionary storytellers. It further commended the cast including its leads, Kyle Chandler and Ben Mendelsohn, who each both have earned Emmy nominations for their roles in the show.
The Netflix statement on the "Bloodline" Season 3 cancellation said that their collaboration with Sony has created a seductive show that viewers worldwide have come to love and still continue to discover. It assures the fans that Kessler and Zelman will have an exciting climax in store for the series on May 2017.
No more entertainment tax incentives
In addition to the cancellation announcement, "Bloodline" Season 3 was also announced to be shortened from 13 episodes to just 10. This may be because that unlike its first two seasons, the new season which is filmed in Florida, will no longer enjoy the state's entertainment tax incentives.
There is no word from Netflix however if this was a main consideration in its decision to end "Bloodline" Season 3. EP Todd Kessler said in an interview a few months ago that he is uncertain on further renewals for the series. He admitted that not being covered by the tax incentive will really affect the show financially and presents a great challenge. It certainly will make things more difficult.
"Bloodline" was initially programmed to have at least a five-season run and Sony may be looking for a new home for the show. There has been no confirmation of this though.
Emmy win for actor
After the cancellation announcement, fans of "Bloodline" Season 3 were met with the good news of Ben Mendelsohn winning this year's Best Supporting Actor Emmy for an actor in a drama series for his role as Danny Rayburn.
The win will likely have no effect on the cancellation after "Bloodline" Season 3 but it will certainly set the stage to showcase the show's strongest player in future episodes. Danny has been given the unorthodox approach of being played in flashbacks after John Rayburn (Kyle Chandler) murdered him in the first season.
Undeniable presence
Since Season 1 until last season's finale, Danny has been an undeniable presence in the series. Now that the show will be cancelled after "Bloodline" Season 3, Danny will likely get more exposure in the show.
Another character that will be getting a lot of attention in "Bloodline" Season 3 is Nolan (Owen Teague), who is Danny's son. Fans hope that the new season will reveal if Nolan will be exposed to be another Danny Rayburn or if he will turn out to be among the better Rayburns.
