'Bond 25' Release Date, News: Are Female Directors Being Considered?
Could "Bond 25" have a female director? Producer Barbara Broccoli said that they are considering all choices for EON productions and MGM.
Speaking with Screen Daily, Broccoli said that plenty of women work behind the scenes of Bond movies. Hence, it's possible that the 25th James Bond film could be directed by a woman for the first time.
"It's incredibly important to support change in front of and behind the camera," Broccoli said. "I love working with women. It's a different vibe," the producer further stated. "At EON we have a lot of women doing job sharing and it's easy with technology."
Previous Bond film directors included Sam Mendes ("Skyfall" and "Spectre"), Marc Foster ("Quantum of Solace"), Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale" and "GoldenEye"), and John Glen ("For Your Eyes Only," "Octopussy" and "A View to a Kill"). But the current shortlist for the still-untitled Bond film set for a 2019 release does not include any female directors.
The top names on the shortlist are Yann Demange ("Secret Diary of a Call Girl", Denis Villeneuve ("Arrival"), and David Mackenzie ("Hell or Highwater"). Also rumored for consideration are Christopher Nolan ("Dunkirk") and Edgar Wright ("Baby Driver").
Kathryn Bigelow broke the glass ceiling in 2008 for winning an Academy award for Best Director for "The Hurt Locker." She remains the only female director to snag such an award.
Since director Patty Jenkins' winning streak for "Wonder Woman," however, the door for female directors helming high profile films have opened wider. "Wonder Woman" continues to break box office records as of press time.
Yet it remains to be seen if Broccoli's production will actually go with a woman behind the helm as development for "Bond 25" is still under negotiations. The 25th Bond movie, which will be penned by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, will bring back Daniel Craig as James Bond for the fifth time.
Filming will begin in early 2018.
