'Boruto: Naruto Next Generations' Plot: Will Naruto Die Soon?

"Naruto" entered a new era this week with the premiere of "Boruto: Naruto Next Generations." After more than a decade of being on air, "Naruto Shippuden" ended its run last month. Fortunately for fans, TV Tokyo announced that the franchise would return with a new anime series focusing on Naruto's son, Boruto.

The pilot episode of "Boruto: Naruto Next Generations" introduced the children of Naruto and Sasuke, and earned a generally favorable response due to its impressive animation and overall aesthetic. However, some fans are concerned that since the new series will focus on Boruto, it is possible that the creators of the series might put an end to Naruto's storyline through the death of the character.

Despite the foreboding introduction of the first episode of "Boruto," it looks like Naruto is going to stay alive throughout the series.

The episode opened with a flash-forward to a time when Boruto was already old and the city of Konoha was in ruins. Boruto stood in front of a villainous boy named Kawaki, who then told Boruto, "I'll send you where I sent the Seventh Hokage."

In the series, the Seventh Hokage is Naruto, and Kawaki's statement seemed to imply that he would kill Boruto so he could join his father in the afterlife. While that is possible, Comicbook.com noted that killing off Naruto would make the future of the franchise bleak.

According to the publication, Naruto might just be sent to another dimension in the current series, or Boruto might be led to believe that his father is dead so he can find the drive to fight Kawaki. Also, if the fabled hero would meet his end in "Boruto: Naruto Next Generations," then the series would not be around for long.

Meanwhile, the premiere episode of the series also introduced Boruto's ocular jutsu. It remains to be seen what this eye technique can do, but fans speculate that it will allow Naruto's son to detect evil chakras from people.

"Boruto: Naruto Next Generations" airs Wednesdays at 5:25 a.m. EDT on Crunchyroll.
