Boxing News 2016: Mayweather Sr. Comes to Son's Aid, Says He Would Lay a Beating on Adrien Broner
As of late, there has been an ongoing feud between former "brothers" Adrien Broner and retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The two men have been beefing for the past few months, and it came to its all-time high on Friday, April 1st, after Broner defeated Mayweather Promotions fighter Ashley Theophane via ninth round stoppage. Right after the fight, "The Problem" immediately called out the man he once referred to as "big bro" and challenged him to a fight.
"I will never let another man disrespect me," Broner said. "I don't care if we're sparring or fighting. Let's get it on."
Mayweather, for his part, simply laughed off Broner's challenge, but also opted to take the high road saying all he wants is the best for the younger fighter.
"I remember when I was young, I didn't have a Floyd Mayweather to steer me the right way," Mayweather said in response. "Don't be like me Adrien – be better than me."
The younger Mayweather may have taken the more civil route in terms of handling the situation, but the same cannot be said about his father, Floyd Sr. In an interview with Boxingscene, the elder Mayweather first clarified that Broner's call out should not be taken seriously, given that it happened on April Fool's Day.
He also stated that Broner was merely doing it for attention, but at the same time was serious about doing the fighting for his own son.
"I'm telling you this right now – you can put this on the news if you want to – you tell Broner to come down here to the gym and I will whip his ass," Mayweather Sr. said. "I will whip the sh-t out of him."
Mayweather Sr. also stated that he "will probably" stop Broner if they do end up fighting, noting "he ain't his son."
The younger Floyd retired from fighting last September, after a one-sided unanimous decision victory over two-time welterweight world champion Andre Berto. He ended his career with a record of 49-0, with 26 victories by knockout.
