Boy Who Donated Long Hair for Cancer Patients' Wigs Now Battles Own Cancer
A boy who supported children with cancer now finds himself in a situation that may require him of the same support he has given.
Vinny Desautels, seven years old, grew his hair for two years so that he could eventually cut it and donate it to children battling with cancer. In the process of growing his hair long, many people mistook him for a girl and teased him relentlessly for it, as per Fox
"He was mistaken for a girl many times…. but Vinny took it like a champ and was like, 'Nah, I'm a boy,'" shared his father, Jason Desautels, to Fox 40.
"I want to help people so they don't have to go to the doctors to fight cancer… and then everyone got excited when mom cut the ponytails off. I was happy," the young Desautels said.
However, in a sad turn of events, just a few months after the young Desautels had his long hair cut, he was diagnosed with an aggressive type of cancer in his hip and eye bone.
As narrated in Desautels' GoFundMe, the boy came home from school one Thursday and complained of a knee pain. As he was preparing to take a shower, his parents saw a notable lump on his right hip. This prompted them to bring the boy to the hospital. It was later identified that the lump was his iliac bone.
The following day, Desautels had his swollen eye checked by eye specialists as they were getting worse. The family initially thought that it was just a case of allergies. However, when they told the eye doctor that the boy had to go back to his other doctor as his swollen eye and the lump on his hip are related, the eye doctor agreed.
As of this writing, the family of Desautels is still waiting for the results of his bone marrow biopsy and the pathology that will identify the type of the cancer that is attacking him.
