The Hollywood actor attended the event without his fiance Angelina Jolie, as the actress is currently in Australia directing her second feature film "Unbroken." He appeared to be in good spirits throughout the night and at one point posed for Instagram photos.

During the awards show Pitt received a shout-out from his "12 Years a Slave" co-star Lupita Nyong'o, who won an award for Outstanding Supporting Actress. The award-winning actor, who also co-produced the film, spoke fondly of the actress.

"She's very special ... Very special young lady. We're going to see great things from her," he said.

Hollywood stars, including Pitt, have been busy in recent weeks attending various awards shows including the Golden Globes. The father of six said that the awards season will likely help the film in reaching a wider audience.

"It's great. It also ensures that more people are going to see it. And in my mind this is a film that only comes along once in a decade and everyone should see this," he said.

"It's that good. It's moving, it's inspirational. It's why I wanted to go into film in the first place," he added.

In December, Pitt was photographed spending quality time with his family in Sydney, where he celebrated his milestone birthday. He took time out from filming "Fury" in London to join his family for the holidays.
