Brie Larson News: Actress Admits Not Clapping for Casey Affleck Has a Message
The 88th Academy Award best actress winner Brie Larson has recently admitted that her act of not clapping for Casey Affleck did have a message.
According to tradition, Larson had to present the winner for Best Actor in the next Oscars following her winning year. Incidentally, Affleck was one of the nominees for the said category in the 89th Oscars last Feb. 26 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
The complication, however, is the fact that Affleck had been involved in alleged sexual harassment cases filed by two women he worked with in 2010 for the film "I'm Still Here." In a report by TIME, one of the complainants reportedly stated that Affleck went into her bed while she was asleep without her permission. He purportedly intimidated the other woman to stay in a certain hotel room despite her initial refusal.
On the other hand, in September 2010, E! Online reported that the lawsuits have been settled with the two complainants saying they had no choice but to drop the charges.
As soon as Affleck was declared the winner and went up the stage, people in the Dolby Theatre were naturally in a celebratory mode – everyone except Larson. While attendees of the 89th Oscars were standing up for Affleck, Larson, who was still on stage, was obviously the only one who did not even bother to clap.
Fans were quick to notice Larson's actions and immediately decoded it since it was not hard to guess why, considering that Larson is known for advocating against sexual harassment. In fact, in the movie "Room," her portrayal of a sexual assault victim was what got her the Oscar.
During an interview with Vanity Fair at the Hollywood premiere of Larson's newest movie "Kong: Skull Island," the award-winning actress said, "I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself. I've said all that I need to say about that topic."
Larson's fans were also quick to recall how, at the 88th Oscars event, the actress actually got up from her seat to meet and hug all the sexual assault survivors that came up with Lady Gaga on stage when the singer performed the song "Till It Happens to You."
As for Affleck's part, after winning the Oscars, he addressed the controversies in an interview with the Boston Globe: "I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else. There's really nothing I can do about it. Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time."
