Buffalo Bills NFL Trade Rumors: Bills Still Can't Decide on Tyrod Taylor's Future
The Buffalo Bills just don't know what to do with Tyrod Taylor right now. They could avoid paying the remaining $30.75 million left on his contract if they release him by the third day of the league year (March 11), but it seems the team's decision makers are still arguing on whether to part ways with him or exercise the option in his contract.
Citing league sources, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora said the Bills' front office executives and their coaching staff aren't on the same page regarding Taylor's future.
"The front office still feels the current salary structure they negotiated themselves a year ago — instead of a more standard year-to-year, pay-as-you-go format — doesn't make sense, thus their interest in veteran QB options like Tony Romo and Brian Hoyer. However, new coach Sean McDermott and Pegula have become close. McDermott and his staff are not convinced they will find an upgrade over Taylor and see no problem with paying Taylor $17M a year, the sources say," he stated in his report.
Well, the Bills shot themselves in the foot by giving Taylor a lucrative contract like that. At least they still have a few more days to argue the pros and cons of picking up the option in his contract. A trade is actually possible, but it's going to be quite difficult because the terms of his contract will still be in place. Teams probably don't want to inherit that. Revising the contract is also an option if they can get Taylor to agree to it.
If the Bills lose Taylor, they will have to take a look at the free agent market because Cardale Jones is the only quarterback under contract for them next season.
Meanwhile, ESPN has reported that the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets are interested in signing Taylor if the Bills decide to release him.
