Burger King Hacked on Twitter: McDonald's Take Over (PHOTOS)

McDonald's Golden Arches became the new emblem for Burger King's Twitter account on Monday after the fast food chain claimed that its account was hacked.

A hacker on Twitter allegedly broke in to Burger King's Twitter account. Some time around mid-afternoon, the chain's emblem was swapped from "BK" to a golden "M." The background picture was also uploaded to promote McDonald's new fish nuggets.ee

Tweets on the account said that McDonalds had bought out Burger King.

"We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you," the company tweeted at noon ET Monday.

Tweets that followed were mostly derogatory and suggested that Burger King employees used drugs while on the job and did unsanitary things with the food. One tweet prompted followers to try the chain's new "BK Bath Salts."

The hack attack took place for over an hour before Twitter was able to suspend the account sometime after 1 p.m. ET. The social networking company released the following statement.

"It has come to our attention that the Twitter account of the BURGER KING® brand has been hacked. We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to re-establish our legitimate site and authentic postings. We apologize to our fans and followers who have been receiving erroneous tweets about other members of our industry and additional inappropriate topics."

The attack was poorly timed for the chain, who is having difficulties in Europe after traces of horse meat were found in some of the chain's beef patties. It was unclear by Monday afternoon, who was responsible for the attack although Anonymous, a well-known hacker group, responded to the incident.

"RT @BurgerKing: Everybody follow us! @YourAnonNews #OpMadCow," the group wrote on Twitter.
