The Capitals opened their season with a 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils to win their first match at home.
Unfortunately, they could not sustain the momentum as they were blanked 5-0 by the San Jose Sharks in their next match.
They turned things around by thrashing defending champions Chicago Blackhawks to get back on the winning column, before beating the Carolina Panthers 4-1 to record their second straight victory of the season.
Now they are beginning a seven-game road run against the Flames and a win may help them get positive results throughout that stretch.
On the other hand, the Flames are clearly struggling.
In their first match of the season, they faced bitter rivals the Vancouver Canucks and fell 5-1 at home.
They were able to avenge that loss when they moved to Vancouver to record their first win of the season.
Unfortunately, the Flames dropped three straight games as they fell to the St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers to continue their woes so far.
A big win over an in-form squad in the Capitals should help boost their confidence moving forward.
