Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare News -- Developers Consulted Actual Pentagon Military Adviser
The "Call of Duty" series has been a veritable money maker for Activision since it released its first title in 2003. However, the game developers are not resting on their laurels, as they have made an even bigger game with its new title, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
The new game is set in 2060, and a terrorist organization named KVA has managed to commit a lot of global chaos. Nuclear power plants have been detonated, and the world is in a post-apocalyptic state. Because nation states are unable to reorganize their armed forces, private military contractors are now waging a war against KVA. Unfortunately, they have their own agendas.
The biggest military contractor is founded by Jonathan Irons, played by Kevin Spacey. Irons has a different plan for the future as he prepares a hostile takeover of what's left of the USA.
Michael Condrey, co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind Advanced Warfare, spoke with The Guardian and talked about how they came up with the game's premise.
"Three years ago, right after we finished Modern Warfare 3, we started thinking about how to change Call of Duty," said Condrey.
"We brought in a lot of outside help — military advisers, futurologists — we got together with a scenario planner from the Department of Defense, who is active in the Pentagon. His job is to think about future threats and prepare 'what if' scenarios for the US government. So we asked him, what do you think will be the conflict of tomorrow?" he added.
The source reportedly ruled out China, a resurgence of the Cold War with Russia, and a consolidation of emergent Islamic extremist states. Instead, the adviser predicted that the next threat to the US' security would come from a private military company.
"We thought that was fascinating and provocative," said Condrey to The Guardian. "What happens when an organization that's built for profit has access to all the latest weapons and technology … What if that got out of control?"
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches Nov. 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.
