'Call of Duty: Black Ops III' News: Release Date, Features and Trailer (VIDEO)

Activision has just confirmed the launch date of its next installment in the "Call of Duty" series, "Black Ops III, that's scheduled to come out in winter this year.

Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch's "Call of Duty: Black Ops III" now has a release date, with publisher Activision announcing a Nov. 6 launch of the first person modern warfare video game.

With the "Black Ops" series the most popular in the "Call of Duty" franchise, Activision Senior Vice President Rob Kostich told Forbes the games company decided on a weekend release instead of its traditional Tuesday North American jump off.

According to Kostich, campaigns across each mode of gameplay for "Black Ops III" have been re-imagined and reshaped, with multiplayer action featuring a four-player cooperative mode, adding more depth for players, and allowing co-players to experience the story together.

Instead of taking on the roles of pre-set characters in the game, players can create and customize their own avatars, taking advantage of a newly added XP system that allows them to upgrade their soldiers and weapons.

Online multiplayer mode has a new "specialist" feature where players can customize and control one character in a choice among nine elite spec-ops soldiers. Each elite fighter has its own unique Power Abilities and Power Weapons.

The gameplay has been modernized with an open environment, eschewing its predecessors' choreographed corridor-level design, giving players the freedom of an enlarged space to explore.

"Black Ops III" is set in a time period 50 years into the future after the events of "Black Ops II" where bio-augmentation and external "cyber rigs" technology have been harnessed to provide soldiers with enhanced motion capabilities, allowing the cybernetically enhanced characters to boost jump in any number of directions, wall run on vertical surfaces, and change direction while on the move, including power sliding and swarming over obstacles without impeding their ability to aim and fire their weapons.

The Nov. 6 global release of "Black Ops 3" will be available for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The preorder date, which has yet to be announced, will give players access to its multiplayer beta before the launch date.
