Call of Duty WWII Launch Sets New Record for Digital Day-One Sales

Activision has confirmed that sales for "Call of Duty: WII" have surpassed half a billion dollars in the first three days of its launching.

The "Call of Duty" franchise's thunder is back. Not only did they rake in more dough than the box office openings of "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Wonder Woman," they made more than the two films combined. Activision announced that overall sales are double the amount compared to last year's title, "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare."

The latest title also set a new record for digital downloads on the PlayStation 4 Store on its first day on the platform. The second World War-inspired shooter is now the best-selling digital full game on the PS4 Store.

Moreover, in the history of the "Call of Duty" franchise, the title has brought in the highest total count of connected users on current generation consoles as well as on PCs.

"We challenged our players to get their squads back together and they answered the call, with the highest number of players we've ever seen on current gen consoles and PC," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, in a statement. "Call of Duty: WWII" returns the franchise to its roots and the results are incredible, selling twice as many units in its opening weekend as last year, and setting the day one record for full-game downloads on PlayStation 4."

Developers Sledgehammer Games and publisher Activision are committed to improving and bringing in new content to the hit title.

It is the fourteenth main installment of the video game series, but it is the first title to be set during the Second World War. It centers on the 1st Infantry Division's battles on the Western Front. And follows the main historical events of the Battle of Normandy which was codenamed Operation Overlord.

"Call of Duty: WWII" is now available for Xbox One and PS4 consoles, and PCs.
