'Call of Duty: WWII' Leads UK Sales Chart on Debut Week; Beats 'Infinite Warfare' Records
"Call of Duty: WWII" had a strong debut week as it finished at the no. 1 spot of the U.K. sales chart with a record that was better than how "Infinite Warfare" performed last year.
The game is the newest offering from the classic first-person shooter video game franchise, and it was launched last Friday. Some say that this new installment is already helping the series rise from the poor reception that greeted 2016's "Infinite Warfare."
According to GfK Chart-Track, "Call of Duty: WWII" has already sold more copies (an increase of 57 percent) compared to how "Infinite Warfare" did around this time. This translates to a 21 percent revenue increase.
Eurogamer noted that "Infinite Warfare's" sales were also way below the market performance of predecessor "Black Ops III's" release in 2015. The report added that "Infinite Warfare" sold 48 percent less than "Black Ops III" during its debut week.
The success of "Call of Duty: WWII" on its first week in the market pushed Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed: Origins" to the second spot after the latter led the charts during its own debut. The Egypt-inspired game was launched on Oct. 27.
Meanwhile, "FIFA 18" retained its top 3 position while Nintendo's "Super Mario Odyssey" for the Switch went down to No. 4 from its top 2 spot last week. Like "FIFA 18," the PlayStation 4-exclusive "Gran Turismo Sport" also stayed put at No. 5.
The No. 6 to 10 spots for the previous week are occupied by "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus," "Forza Motorsport 7," "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe," "Forza Horizon 3," and "Middle-earth: Shadow of War," respectively.
Meanwhile, despite gaming critics' generally positive reviews of "Call of Duty: WWII," many cannot overlook the title's performance and gameplay issues. In fact, Activision assured players that they were aware of a number of flaws and are working on an update to fix them.
In a statement that addressed fans and the gaming community, developer Sledgehammer Games explained what caused several early issues such as online connectivity problems, the deactivation of the Leaderboards, and players randomly losing their ranks, and how these were being resolved.
"Call of Duty: WWII" is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
