'Call the Midwife' season 5 spoilers: New season could focus on healing

The BBC smash period drama series will return for an all-new season. The series revolves around a small group of nurses who work in a nursing convent called Nonnatus House during the 1950s in London's East End.

The last season ended on a sad note as most of the characters were in dire need of some healing. Delia (Kate Lamb) was hit by a car while she was riding Patsy's (Emerald Fennell) bike, which caused her amnesia. Trixie (Helen George) fell off the wagon and became addicted and she was put into a care program. However, there was one happy event as Fred (Cliff Parisi) and Violet (Annabelle Apison) finally tied the knot.

The new season could go two ways. It could focus on the struggles of Trixie and Pasty as they deal with the events that happened in the last season, or it could do a time jump to a point where they are both over what happened. Whatever the writers choose, it will surely be very interesting.

The brand-new season has started filming as the cast celebrated the show's return. Laura Main and Helen George both tweeted about being back on set. "Have had such a lovely first day back with everyone on 'Call the Midwife.' So glad to be getting to do more. Series 5, can't believe it!!" Main's tweet said. George, on the other hand, celebrated by eating all the scones on the set. Stephen McGann also tweeted about the Christmas special. "Yep. Another Christmas in May :-) Me and @LauraMain1 doing our festive thaaang. #callthemidwife #Series5," his tweet said.

Actress Jenny Agutter spoke about the Christmas special. She mentioned that it was very different from the very first episode of the series, which tackled a different issue that was relevant during that period. Furthermore, she added that the series changed when it moved into the 1960s. "The series was very much about the beginning of the sixties, and with that, you see all the wonderful opportunities that people start to have; you have the NHS and you start to take things for granted," she said. "Then on the other side of that, there's quite a lot of anguish; suddenly one looks at the rotten parts of society, realizing how bigoted people are; realizing how stuck one is with certain things," she said.

Season 5 is expected to air in the United States sometime next year.
