Canelo Alvarez Next Fight News: Promoter Oscar De La Hoya wants Floyd Mayweather rematch for Mexican fighter
Golden Boy Promotions head honcho Oscar De La Hoya foresees a rematch between his most prized ward Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and retired undefeated fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez, now a two-division world champion, defeated middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto recently. The Mexican fighter bagged the WBC, Lineal and Ring Magazine 160-pound titles after winning a unanimous decision verdict over the Puerto Rican boxing great.
After the fight, Canelo now holds a record of 46-1-1, with 32 victories by knockout. His lone loss came in the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr., whom he fought in September 2013. According to a report by Boxingscene, De La Hoya says they are open to another fight with "Money May".
"Well, we would be open to it – absolutely," De La Hoya said. "I'm sure Canelo would love to he opportunity. Like I said, Canelo is the man right now."
"That's why I said we're fighting him in May and then fighting him in September - whether it's in Las Vegas or anywhere around the world, he is fighting in May and September," he continued. "And you know, if Mayweather wants to fight him - we can discuss that in the future."
Mayweather announced his retirement in September, after coasting through former world champion Andre Berto in a landslide unanimous decision victory. He has also repeatedly insisted that he will remain retired this time around.
For his part, Alvarez opted not to discuss his next immediate plans for the time being. But in another report by Boxingscene.com, Canelo refused to specify which weight division he will be competing at next.
"Right now I just want to rest. I'll eventually sit down with my team and discuss what we're going to do," said the 25-year old fighter. "So we'll see, but right now I'm just going to rest and spend time with my family."
