Cannes Film Festival 2016: 4 Film Entries That Matter

There always is anticipation whenever the Cannes Film Festival draws near, and that is attributed to the showcase of a lineup of the most significant films of the year. But unlike other film festivals that are likewise held on an annual basis, Cannes always gives opportunities to everyone, not just those big-budget flicks and blockbuster material-type of movies.

There are films that fancy the young and new generation even though they don't really mean much, and there are some that matter, at least in the perspective of art. Here's a list of those we believe have what it takes to bring home the bacon in this year's festival:

1. "The BFG"

One good reason to be excited about this film is because it's from Steven Spielberg. Shortcut for "Big Friendly Giant," the film is actually an adaptation of a children's story by Roald Dahl. It features the adventures of Sophie, an orphan, and BFG, a dreamer who kidnaps Sophie to cure his loneliness. They embark on a journey to capture evil giants that threaten the world.

2 . "The Nice Guys"

Shane Black is the master in action-packed buddy flicks and his latest film featuring big stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling has the makings of another "Lethal Weapon." The buddy cop mystery comedy film is about a private investigator (Gosling) and an enforcer (Crowe) as they stumble upon a criminal conspiracy while investigating a case of a missing girl.

3. "Aquarius"

An intriguing entry for the Palme d'Or in Cannes is a film from renowned Brazilian director Kleber Mendonca Filho. Titled "Aquarius," it is classified as a drama story about a music critic who is about to clash with a property developer, The Telegraph reports. Although Filho isn't a big name in the international stage, he actually made a name for himself with another hit drama, "Neighboring Sounds," four years back. The term, "Aquarius" refers to a two-story old apartment building that is about to be demolished by a developer who acquired it.

4. "The Neon Demon"

After "Drive" and "Only God Forgives," director Nicolas Winding Refn will again be bringing another film to compete for the Palme d'Or. This time, it's a horror-thriller called "The Neon Demon." One thing that makes this film intriguing enough is that Refn himself aims to redeem himself after critics panned "Only God Forgives." This one stars Ellie Fanning as an aspiring model who becomes a target of her fellow models in the industry due to her perfect combination of beauty and youth.
