'Captain America: Civil War' Spoilers: Spider-Man Will Have An 'Everyman Appeal' In 'Civil War,' Directors Reveal
"Captain America: Civil War" directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who have previously helmed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," have spoken out about how Spider-Man (Tom Holland) will appear in the upcoming film, saying, "We took a very personal approach to the character."
In an interview with ComicBook.com, the Russos explained their inspiration for the character and recounted their childhood love for Spider-Man. "We had thought back to the things that excited us about him as a character when we were younger, and one of the most important components of that was that he's a high schooler burdened with incredible powers and responsibility," Joe said. According to the director, this is what sets Spider-Man apart from the rest of the superheroes in the Marvel universe.
Speaking about how Holland's Spider-Man will differ from Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's, Joe explained that it was crucial for them that the actor they cast should be very close in age to a high school student, in contrast to the previous films which had adults playing a teenager. The director said that when they were casting for the role, they were looking for - and were very specific about - authenticity.
"We wanted an energy and charisma from the character, an energy, but also an insecurity that would make him fun to watch in contrast to the confident superheroes," Joe said, according to the same ComicBook.com report.
19-year-old Holland, who previously appeared in 2012's "The Impossible" and who, as a dancer, played the title role in "Billy Elliott the Musical," fit the bill.
The directors also wanted to emphasize "The everyman appeal of the character, which is something we've always loved," Anthony added. According to the directors, they asked themselves a bunch of questions about the character, including what would his living situation be and where would he and his aunt live and what kind of dwelling would they be able to afford on a single income. In dealing with the character, Joe said they tried to be as realistic and logical as possible and that they've also added in a few other personal touches.
"Captain America: Civil War" is set to land in cinemas on May 6.
