'Castle' plot and cast news: New character to spice up season

There have been several speculations concerning the upcoming season of "Castle" now that its premiere is nearing. The previous season ended with the exit of Captain Victoria Gates. This surprised fans and left them wondering about the happenings of season 8. However, this is expected to put more focus on Beckett's character. During the Television Critics Association, it was mentioned by executive producer Alexi Hawley that Beckett will return as the new captain. With that, the series will introduce new drama for the couple. The dynamics of their relationship will change, especially with Beckett now in charge.

Executive producer Terence Paul Winter explained that Beckett will be solving cases outside the office. Winter has replaced David Amann, who worked on the previous season of the series. He recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly stating, "She's not going to be a traditional captain who is in the office. She's boots on the ground. She's going to be involved in the interrogation." It was also shared that Castle's daughter will be seen in a different light and in a new haircut, according to TVLine. Her character is expected to mature in the upcoming season.

Season 8 will introduce a new character who will be played by Toks Olagundoye. She will take on the role of Hayley Shipton. She is expected to drive a wedge between Beckett and Castle after being assigned as Castle's partner. Described as a "strong, powerful, beautiful, independent woman," her presence will bring a new vibe to the show. Executive producer Alexi Hawley also explained, "It's a voice that the show doesn't have. What's great about her is Castle [Nathan Fillion] has been investigating cases police-adjacent, so it's always about doing things the way police would. She doesn't do things that way, so that fun dynamic of, 'No, we break in rather than get a warrant,' is kind of fun."

Castle will return with season 8 on Sept. 21.
