In this group, the Blues are favoured to win every match they take part in but their recent form has raised a lot of questions for the English champions.

As defending champions in the league, Chelsea were expected to start off well but have not done so – only managing one victory in their first five league games.

They already have three losses so far, against Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Everton.

If their form carries over to the UEFA Champions League then it will easily spell trouble for Jose Mourinho and the rest of his men.

Even against weaker opponents, they seem to have a hard time asserting their will and it may be capitalised on by Maccabi Tel Aviv.

In last year's competition, Chelsea reached the final-16 of the competition but were eliminated by Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain after draws in the first and second leg ended their battle with a 3-3 aggregate score. PSG moved on thanks to away goals.

This year, Mourinho and company are clearly looking to win the second European title in team's history but have to take it a game at a time given their unpredictable nature at the moment.

On the other hand, Maccabi may very well take advantage of this moment to add to Chelsea's misery.

Their league form has been decent as they are second in the league after three games and are unbeaten so far in the Ligat ha'Al.

Last year, they were eliminated in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League but have now done better to be part of the elite group in Europe.

Maccabi began this year in the second qualifying round and beat Hibernians before eliminating Viktoria Plzen to move on to the playoff round.

From there they upset Swiss squad FC Basel for their seat in the UEFA Champions League group stages.
