'Chicago P.D.' Season 5 Spoilers: Burgess Tries to Prove Toma's Innocence in Episode 2
Det. Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) takes a stand for her fellow police officer on the next episode of "Chicago P.D." season 5.
Titled "The Thing About Heroes," next week's episode will see a mysterious van explode during a Chicago street festival. Muslim patrol officer Frank Toma (guest star Ben Youcef) goes missing after the incident, leading his fellow officers to suspect he might have something to do with the explosion. Burgess, who helped Toma while he was still training, does everything in her power to prove he is innocent.
The promo shows several action-packed sequences as the team tries to find the suspect behind the terrorist attack. The detectives are determined to pin down Toma, who they believe was behind the explosion. Burgess stands up for him, but it might be too late as Det. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) is seen pointing a gun at his head.
Although the new season kicked off without Det. Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush), Wednesday's premiere proved that she is not forgotten as the team tried to cope with losing one of their own.
Aside from welcoming Det. Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiradakos) and celebrating the return of Det. Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda), the Central Intelligence Unit will be pushed to the limits as they deal with moral dilemmas while doing their job.
"There's a lot of interesting stuff going on in Chicago right now as it relates to the police department and to crime," new showrunner Rick Eid told Entertainment Weekly, "so I think we're really trying to locate the show in that universe more ... There's reform, the federal government is sort of helping them do their jobs, so to speak. So there's a lot going on there that makes for interesting television, hopefully."
The fifth season of "Chicago P.D." airs every Wednesday night at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
