'Chicago PD' Season 5 Spoilers: Marina Squerciati Teases Terrorist Case, Burgess' Romantic Life

The upcoming episode of "Chicago PD" season 5 will see Detective Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) fighting to prove the innocence of Frank Toma (guest star Ben Youcef), a Muslim patrol officer being blamed for a terrorist attack.

The synopsis of the new episode, titled "The Thing About Heroes," states that Frank will be the primary suspect when a van explodes during a Chicago street festival. The attack is pinned on Frank, who suddenly disappears, and all the evidence found will point to him.

Burgess has a personal connection to Frank because she helped train him. As a result, she will do everything to try and clear his name, including disobeying her superiors.

"There's a scene in this episode where I actually yell at Voight and challenge him," Squerciati previewed to TVLine. "I get in his face. That was kind of awesome. I didn't know Burgess had it in her, but she did."

Squerciati also explained why proving Frank's innocence is so important to her. "Her friend happens to be a Muslim man being accused of a terrorist incident," she said. "She feels, deep in her bones, that it's not the case."

Apart from the case, Squerciati also discussed her character's romantic life, specifically Burgess' old and new boyfriends. The actress admitted that Burgess may still have some lingering feelings for Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), but that does not mean that her new beau is just a fling.

"I get the sense that it's getting serious. But we'll see," she teased.

As for fans who are hoping Ruzek and Burgess get back together, Squerciati revealed that chances for that reunion are slim. She explained that her character is already moving on from her past relationship. And should they ever rekindle their relationship, it may be far down the road, as Squerciati believes that "this is not their time."

"Chicago PD" season 5 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m., EDT on NBC.
