'Children of the Whales' Air Date, Spoilers: The Life-Changing Adventures of an Archivist Begins in Upcoming Fall Anime Series
A young archivist's life is about to change as the upcoming Japanese anime series, "Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau (Whale Calves Sing on the Sand)," also known as "Children of the Whales," begins airing in October.
Chakuro is a 14-year-old resident of a remote utopian island called Mud Whale. What makes this island unique is that instead of floating on the surface of the ocean, it is instead located in an endless sea of sand. Also, nine out of ten of its people are both blessed and cursed with an ability known as saimia, which is a kind of special power that dooms its caster to an early death.
Even at a young age, Chakuro can already take pride in the number of other islands he has visited as an archivist for Mud Whale. However, no matter how far he and his friends have gone, not once did they ever meet, see, or heard of a human who wasn't from their own home island; that is, until Chakuro visits an island equal in size as Mud Whale and there meets a mysterious girl who is bound to change his destiny.
The series is based on a Japanese manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Abi Umeda. It was first published in the July 2013 issue of the shoujo manga magazine, Monthly Mystery Bonita, and has since been released in eight collective volumes. Viz Media has reportedly announced at the Anime Boston held earlier this year that they have licensed the manga for an English version release.
On the other hand, the anime adaptation is going to be directed by Kyouhei Ishiguro, with Michiko Yokote in-charge of writing the episode scripts and J.C. Staff taking care of the animation. Haruko Iizuka is working on the character designs while Hiroaki Tsutsumi will be providing the music.
Moreover, it has been announced that an original video animation (OVA) will be included in the series' first Blu-ray and DVD box set scheduled for release on Jan. 26 of next year.
"Children of the Whales" premieres on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 11 p.m. JST on Tokyo MX and KBS Kyoto. It will also air on Sun TV on the same day at late night 1 a.m. JST and on BS11 starting on Tuesday, Oct. 10, late night at 12:30 a.m. JST. Information on other broadcast schedules and online resources can be found on the series' official site.
