Christians divided over Kim Davis case

The Christian community has since been on various fires, and just recently, more fuel has been added to the raging flames when Kim Davis was imprisoned for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Surprisingly, the response of Christians to the Kentucky county clerk's case was half-half. It has been hard to tell whether most Christians support Davis or most of them despise her for her stand.

According to Patrina Mosley of The Christian Post, Christians themselves have stood against Davis and her decision, with some on social media calling the clerk a "homophobic Christian."

Mosley says she was surprised not by what the media or the LGBT community are saying to slam Davis and her "refusal to do her job," as what other social media users say, but by how the Christian community reacted and continues to react to the clerk's decision.

Christians accepted bakers and photographers who refused to give service to same-sex couples, but disgraced the clerk for "not doing her job," and Mosley notes that the case, plus the Christian community's shocking reaction, has "misguided fellow Christians."

The Associated Press says freedom advocates have also been split after the court decided to imprison Davis and force her to issue same-sex marriage licenses, though she has publicly stated that the order is against her religious freedom.

According to the outlet, some conservative leaders believe that Davis' case should draw a line between the real meaning of religious freedom, pointing out that as long as the government does not start telling Christians how to run their own religious constitutions, then everything should be fine.

Peter Wehner, a Christian commentator who has served in the three previous Republican presidential administrations, said, "I think she's wrong on the merits, wrong theologically and her stance is harmful to Christians both in the religious liberty debate and in trying to present Christianity to the watching world."

Meanwhile, various Christian groups continue to stand with Davis and still believe that the clerk has only made the Christian faith stronger amid the government and court's twisted stand on religious freedom.
