Chromecast Now Compatible With 10 New Apps
Google's Chromecast is now compatible with a slew of new apps including Plex, Vevo, and Songza.
The HDMI streaming adapter retails for $35 and can now play local files that are synced with users Plex media library from iOS, Android or Chrome. Plex support was highly requested by Chromecast users looking to play content from a device on an HDTV.
Vevo and Songza provide users with premium apps to listen to and discover new music.
Other apps added to the list of those that work with Chromecast include Red Bull TV, Post TV from The Washington Post, Viki, and RealPlayer Cloud. The new channels should be rolling out to iOS, Android and Chrome shortly.
These new apps join the likes of HBO Go, YouTube and Netflix which were all recently made compatible with the device.
Chromecast utilizes data from a cloud and sends it directly to a TV set through its HDMI output. Content can be accessed from those clouds by connecting the Chromecast and a device such as a smartphone or tablet directly to a Wi-Fi network. Once the user's app is connected, anything they watch or play on the device's app will also show up on their TV screen giving them a bigger screen to watch Netflix or other video apps content on.
Other apps expected to hit Chromecast soon include Spotify and Amazon Video.
Chromecast is a great way to stream content such as music and movies on a TV as manual wired connections are inconvenient and unnecessarily expensive. Certain smartphones are only compatible with specific adapters making the purchase of one a bit tricky. Chromecast cuts the wire out completely and provides optimum picture on the TV screen without having to re format it directly from the phone.
