Cleveland Browns NFL Trade Rumors: Browns Reportedly Interested in Geno Smith

Geno Smith might have failed to convince the New York Jets that he could start at quarterback, but he's actually garnering a lot of interest in the free agency market. Most of his suitors want to sign him as a backup quarterback, but may actually have a chance to start for one of the teams eyeing him.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport has reported that the Browns have expressed interest in signing Smith and he said the quarterback could potentially compete for a starting job.

Well, the Browns currently have three quarterbacks on their roster: Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan and Brock Osweiler. Everybody knows that Osweiler is as good as gone, so Smith only has to compete against Kessler and Hogan.

The Jets selected Smith in the second round of the 2013 National Football League (NFL) draft and he was the team's starting quarterback during his rookie season. He also started in 13 games during the 2014 season, but he hasn't played much in the last two seasons.

In his four seasons in the league, Smith has failed to impress the Jets, so why do the Browns want to sign him? Okay, Smith may be good enough to play in the big leagues, but a lot of observers are puzzled with the team's interest in the quarterback.

"The general vibe is that Browns fans do not want to see Smith in a Browns uniform, and I'm of that same mentality, which makes me hope the Giants end up signing him so we can put that possibility to bed," Chris Pokorny of Dawgs By Nature said in his piece about the potential Smith signing.

"If the Browns are looking for someone to come in who can be an option beyond 2017 and reverse the trend of the starter losing his job during the season, Smith is not the answer," Dawg Pound Daily's Steven Kubitza stated in his report.

Smith is fine as a backup, but he's not the starting quarterback the Browns need right now.
