Cleveland Cavaliers Trade, Roster News 2015: Tristan Thompson re-signs with Cavs for five more years
The Cleveland Cavaliers management has decided re-sign Power Forward/Center Tristan Thompson to a five-year deal.
According to a report by ESPN.com, Cavaliers' General Manager David Griffin made the announcement on Thursday, stating the $82 million contract. The new deal now makes Thompson the sixth-highest-paid power forward in the NBA today.
The 2011 fourth-overall draft pick has been in talks with team management for the last year. In the fall of 2014, Thompson had already been offered a four-year $50 million deal, in which he eventually declined.
In another report by NBA.com, Thompson was able to play in all of the team's 82 games in the 2014-15 season, 15 of which he played as a starter. For it he holds the second-longest active streak in the NBA, behind DeAndre Jordan's 322 consecutive games played since 2011. He ended the regular season averaging 8.5 points per game with a .547 field goal percentage, with 8.0 rebounds through 26.8 minutes per game.
The aforementioned report adds that the terms of the contract were not released (per team and league policy). His shining moments were carried out through the 2015 NBA Playoffs, when he was given the opportunity to once again be part of the starting line-up to replace an injured Kevin Love. Thompson played in all 20 games, (15 of which as a starter), averaging 9.6 points per game with a .558 field goal percentage. He also racked up 10.8 rebounds through 36.4 minutes per game.
The Cavaliers did end up losing the series in six games.
For his part, the 24-year old athlete is merely thankful for what he has accomplished from all the hard work he had been putting in.
"It's been a long summer of grinding and hard work but now it's back to The Land to take care of some unfinished business. #HappyToBeBack #ALLin," Thompson wrote through his Instagram account.
The Cleveland Cavaliers will be playing against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday at the Wells Fargo Center.
